Who Qualifies to Live at MVG?

For Independent Living,
applicants must fall into one of three categories:

Categories

  • Individuals and/or their spouse*, employed with the PCUSA in a position validated by a higher governing body as a Teaching Elder (minister), missionary, Certified Christian Educator, Certified Musician Associate, or Commissioned Ruling Elder of the PCUSA.

    Primary Category qualifications require 15 years of service, 20 years with the Board of Pensions or other retirement fund. This category is eligible for financial assistance.

    • Same as Primary Category but with less than 15 years of service (10 to 15 years of service, 20 years in a retirement fund, eligible for financial assistance).

    • A Teaching Elder or Lay Member in the following PCUSA categories: Chief Administrator, Ruling Elder Commissions to Validated Ministry (15 years of service, 20 years in a retirement fund, not eligible for financial assistance).

    • Ministry (Pastor/co-Pastor, Temporary Pastoral Relationship, Stated Supply, Chief Administrative Officers) associated with the 5 churches that are in full communion with the PCUSA:

      Korean Presbyterian Church Abroad

      Evangelical Lutheran Church of America

      Moravian-Reformed Covenant Partnership

      Reformed Church in America

      United Church of Christ

      (15 years of service, 20 years in a retirement fund, not eligible for financial assistance).

    • Those in good standing with a church which is in correspondence (denominations who, along with the PCUSA are members of the National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA) with the PCUSA, and whose ordination standards and vows are consistent with the PCUSA (15 years of service, 20 years in a retirement fund, not eligible for financial assistance).

    • Current member in good standing of the PCUSA

    Member of and attends a PCUSA church for at least the last consecutive 10-years prior to applying.

    • Have sufficient financial resources to meet all MVG financial requirements without assistance.

    A review of the Financial Disclosure Form should indicate a net worth of approximately one million dollars for each 10 years of remaining lifespan according to actuarial tables.

    • Willing to accept a vacant cottage that no one on the Primary or Secondary Waiting Lists are in a position to accept.

    The applicant understands that the Primary and Secondary waiting lists have first right of refusal on all vacant cottages.

    • Three (3) letters of recommendation validating their volunteer service in the PCUSA.

    One must be from the pastor of their current church of membership. The other two letters can be from current residents (limit 1), other pastors, PCUSA leaders, etc. The letters should address the past 10 years of service in PCUSA and/or MVG.

    • Leadership, volunteer and staff positions with MVG and/or PCUSA.

    This service with MVG and/or PCUSA must have been in the most recent 10 years prior to their application. Explanations for breaks in service will be considered but may not be sufficient for approval of application.

    • Support the mission and vision of MVG.

    Examples: service as a trustee, committee work, task force work, employed by MVG for 10+ years, financial support, etc.

    • Is appropriate for community living and fits in with the current culture of MVG.

    Determined by the Resident Relations Committee and/or the Board of Trustees.

    ADDITIONAL CONSIDERATION GIVEN IF:

    • Only miss the requirements for the Primary or Secondary categories by a small margin

    Someone who, if they had a few additional years of service, would qualify for the Primary or Secondary categories.

    • Would contribute and expand the diversity and inclusivity of MVG.

    • You can expedite the process by downloading the appropriate form below, complete and either send to Noelle or make an appointment to bring in person.

    • For Primary and Secondary Categories, the service record is validated by the Board of Pensions and/or appropriate governing body.

    • For Extended Category, the letters of recommendation are reviewed to ensure the requirements are met.

    • The CEO reviews your application packet to ensure that it is complete and meets MVG qualifications under the appropriate category.

    • Your application is presented to the Resident Relations Committee of the board for review/approval. This committee meets every other month. The Dir. Of Residential Living will let you know if your application is moving to the next level.

    • The Resident Relations Committee presents your application to the Board. The Board meetings five times a year.

    • The Dir. Of Residential Living will let you know that your application has been formally approved and discuss next steps.

    • We have an “Active” and “Inactive” waiting list under each category, Primary, Secondary, and Extended.

    • If you wish to move in sometime in the next three years, you will be placed on the Active Waiting List.

    • You will receive regular communications from MVG, including information about events and other happenings. We encourage you to take part in community life as you are able to make your transition easier.

    • Each time a cottage becomes available, we contact applicants in the order approved on the Active Primary Waiting List first, followed by the Secondary List, and lastly, the Extended List.

    • After several refusals, you may be placed on the Inactive Waiting List.

    If your plans are uncertain or your move-in is beyond the next three years, you will be placed on the Inactive Waiting List.

    • You will receive regular communications from MVG, including information about events and other happenings. We encourage you to take part in community life as you are able, so when you are ready to move, your transition is easier.

    • You will need to notify us when your plans change, and you wish to move-in during the next three years.

    • We will move you to the appropriate Active Waiting List and begin contacting you when a cottage becomes available that no one ahead of you on the list has contracted.
