Who Qualifies to Live at MVG?
We accept applicants for Independent Living from two categories:
Primary Category

Applicants and/or their spouses meeting one or more of the following qualifications may be considered under the Primary Category. All Primary Category applicants are generally expected to have twenty (20) years of participation in the PCUSA Board of Pensions and/or another retirement plan

Teaching Elder (Minister of Word & Sacrament
Mission Co-worker
Certified Christian Educator
Certified Musician
Commissioned Ruling Elder
Other Board-approved commissioned ministries
Spouse or surviving spouse of an eligible individual

Applicants and/or their spouse with fifteen (15) or more years of qualifying service are normally eligible for consideration.
Applicants and/or their spouse with fewer than fifteen (15) years of service may be considered at the discretion of the Resident Relations Committee. Applicants with fewer than ten(10) years of qualifying service are generally not eligible for financial assistance.

Primary Category applicants undergo a financial evaluation to determine if they qualify for mission-based financial assistance with the entrance fee and/or the monthly fee. The Board reserves the right to limit the number of applicants receiving mission-based financial assistance and/or the dollar amount in any given year.
The Entrance Fee for a Primary Category applicant is generally 30% of their net worth. The Monthly Fee Primary Category applicant is generally 40% of monthly income (45% for couples).

Applicants admitted under the Primary Category are given first right of refusal on all available cottages. If a Primary Category applicant has been approved for mission-based financial assistance, they may be limited on the size of the cottage:
• cottages of approximately 1,100 square feet or less for single applicants; and
• cottages of approximately 1,200 square feet or less for couples description
Extended Category

Applicants who do not qualify under the Primary Category may be considered under the Extended Category. Extended Category eligibility may include individuals who demonstrate meaningful service, leadership, or long-term commitment to the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), churches in full communion or correspondence with the PCUSA, or Monte Vista Grove.

Active PCUSA lay members in leadership positions
Clergy serving churches in full communion with the PCUSA
Clergy and eligible lay leaders serving churches in correspondence with the PCUSA
MVG or denominational leadership

Membership and service should generally have occurred within the ten (10) years immediately preceding application. Breaks in service may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
The surviving spouse of an Extended Category Applicant may not qualify solely under their deceased spouse’s record.

Extended Category applicants must demonstrate sufficient financial resources to meet the financial obligations of residency.
General guidelines:
Entrance Fee: approximately 30% of net worth (not to exceed published rates)
Monthly Fee: approximately 40% of monthly income from all sources (45% for couples), not to exceed published rates.
Applicants admitted under the Extended Category are not eligible for financial assistance unless otherwise authorized by the Management Committee.

Applicants admitted under the Extended Category acknowledge that applicants in the Primary Category have priority for available cottages. Extended Category applicants must be willing to accept a cottage after it has first been offered to eligible applicants on the Primary Waiting List.
